ONEONTA, NY -- The visiting Dutchwomen of Union jumped out to an early two set lead Thursday on the road, but had to battle through a five-set match before pulling out a non conference win against Oneonta State tonight in volleyball action. The Win for Union lifted its overall record to 31-5 while the Red Dragons fall to 15-20 overall. Union won by scores of 25-18, 28-26, 16-25, 17-25, 25-15.
After tying the first set at five apiece, Union asserted itself and took control en route to a 25-18 win. In the second set, Union trailed 18-15 before battling back to tie the set at 20-20. From that point the two teams traded points until the Dutchwomen pulled it out for a 28-26 win.
After a short intermission, the hosts seized the momentum midway through the third set and carried it through the fourth set to tie the match at two sets each forcing the fifth and deciding set.
Oneonta jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the final set before Union bounced back with six of the next seven points to take the lead for good at 7-4. The visitors locked it in and won the decisive set 15-8.
Union was led on the attack tonight by senior
Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) and freshman
Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY) who each finished with 12 kills. Schumaker also had a team-high seven blocks. Defensively the Dutchwomen were led by junior
Veronica Mynders (Greenville, NY) and senior
Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY), who had 20 digs and 15 digs respectively. Sophomore
Erika VanValkenburg (Baldwinsville, NY) had a team-high 33 assists in directing the offense.
Union hosts the Liberty League Championship November 7 and 8.
