SCHENECTADY, NY -- Julie LaSpina had 13 kills and
Erika VanValkenburg dished out 41 assists as the Union College volleyball team opened up the Liberty League Championship Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Skidmore College Friday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchwomen closed out the night with a 3-2 win over Clarkson, featuring 19 kills from
Erin Schumaker.
The Dutchwomen (33-5 after the two wins) defeated the Thoroughbreds for the fourth time this season. Union won by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-20.
Rachel Ormsby had 11 kills and 10 digs along with 10 total blocks, and
Kaitlyn Evans added 12 digs in the win.
Eve Richards posted 10 kills and four blocks for the Dutchwomen.
In the nightcap, Union pulled out a grueling five game win over the Golden Knights. The Dutchwomen won by scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-13. Union trailed 20-10 in the fourth and almost won it, and came back from a 12-8 deficit in the fifth game.
Erika VanValkenburg recorded 36 assists and
Veronica Mynders had 28 digs. LaSpina, Ormsby and
Bridget Little recorded eight kills each.
Union plays Vassar Saturday at 11 a.m. and St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
