BOSTON, MA -- Senior Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) helped lead the Union volleyball team to a pair of victories in the Tufts Invitational at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday night. The Dutchwomen downed Colby-Sawyer in three games, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-20, then ended the evening with a sweep over Polytechnic, 25-17, 25-12 and 28-26. Union is now 23-1 in the 2008 season.
In the opening win, Ormsby had 12 kills, three blocks and four assists. Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) had seven kills and three blocks while Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) finished with 31 assists. Other highlights in the win over Colby-Sawyer included nine kills from Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) and five kills with two blocks from Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY).
Ormsby's 14 kills and nine digs stood out for the Dutchwomen in the sweep later in the evening against Polytechnic. Merinder had 30 assists and Richards recorded seven kills. Veronica Mynders (Greenville, NY) finished the match with 16 digs.
Union will continue play in the Tufts Invitational today with matches at the host school. The Dutchwomen will face Wellesley at 10 a.m. at Cousens Gym, then will meet Tufts at 12 p.m. at Chase Gym.
