Volleyball wins Tufts Invitational, defeats host and Wellesley

BOSTON, MA -- The Union College volleyball team won the Tufts Invitational by defeating the previously undefeated host school in three games Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Dutchwomen downed Wellesley in four games. Union is now 25-1 with an 11 match winning streak.

Scores of the title win over the Jumbos, who entered the match with a 15-0 record, were 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20. Union downed Wellesley, 25-20, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-21. Union had received votes in this week's AVCA national poll, and only six teams in the Top 25 had one or zero losses entering the week.

Senior Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

In the first match of the day, Orsmby had nine kills and 12 digs for the Dutchwomen. Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) had 35 assists in this win and Veronica Mynders (Greenville, NY) had 16 digs. Other highlights in the win included 13 blocks and seven kills from Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY) and eight kills and four blocks from Bridget Little (Glenville, NY).

Tufts had only lost eight games out of 53 total games entering the match with Union. But the Dutchwomen got a strong performance in a total team effort. Ormsby had four blocks with her nine kills, Richards recorded eight kills with three blocks, Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) had six blocks and six kills, and Little blocked seven. Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) finished with seven kills and Merinder dished out a total of 30 assists. Mynders led Union with 22 digs and Erika VanValkenburg (Baldwinsville, NY) also had a great match with 16 digs.

Union returns home for the Interleague Challenge Friday and Saturday. Matches will be held at the Viniar Athletic Center and Memorial Fieldhouse.
