SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman forward
Craig Santangelo (Sayville, NY) scored two goals and sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Green (Santa Barbara, CA) recorded his first career victory in net as Union defeated Babson, 3-1 at College Park Field Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 6-2-1 while the Beavers fell to 7-3-1.
Union also got the eventual game winning goal from
Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT), while Green made four saves in the victory. The Dutchmen had a 15-9 shot advantage and 5-1 advantage in corners. Babson's lone score came from senior Shane Fogarty (Rye, NH). Babson goalkeeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, MA) made three saves for the visitors.
The Dutchmen scored the only goal of the first half. Santangelo headed in a cross from
John Manna (Acton, MA) to the right of the keeper at 37:59. At 55:53, Green made a tremendous leaping save high in front of his net after a shot directly in front from Babson midfielder Ben Myerson (South Nyack, NY), preserving the lead. The Dutchmen made it 2-0 just moments later, as Steiner scored his second of the year at 58:55.
Kyle Riter (Rochester, NY) had a corner from the left side that Steiner headed in inside the goalkeeper's left post.
Babson got on the board and made it a one goal game at 68:38. Tim Winn (Sutton, MA) took a cross from the left and of the net, and after the keeper came out to stop the ball, the cross got through to an open Fogarty, who tapped in his second of the year. But Santangelo regained Union's two goal lead with his second of the season and second of the day at 69:34. A high kick from midfield from
Kevan Benn (Ottawa, ON) found Santangelo on the left of the net and the freshman fired home the final score of the day.
Union returns to action Friday at Hobart for a 4 p.m. Liberty League game.
