SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College women's basketball team, trailing by six at halftime, featured a 25-7 second half run en route a 65-54 win over Utica at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Maria Tobin led the Dutchwomen with 22 points and seven rebounds while
Michelle Rogers had a double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Lauren McCormcik scored 12 points and had seven boards for the Dutchwomen, who trailed 25-19 at the half but outscored the Pioneers, 46-29 with 44% second half shooting while holding Utica to 36% shooting in the half. The Dutchwomen forced 24 turnovers.
Senior guard Mallory Davis (Rockville, CT) led Utica with a game high 24 points along with seven boards, and sophomore forward Jessica Berry (Rome, NY) pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.
Utica held Union to 23% shooting en route to the 25-19 first half lead. Utica led by eight at 33-25 with 15:41 left in the second half on a three pointer by Davis. But Union outscored the Pioneers, 16-0 in the next 3:53, featuring five points by Rogers during that streak. From the eight point deficit to 8:39 remaining, Union had outscored the Pioneers 25-7. The largest lead for the Dutchwomen was 15, at 62-47 with 3:03 remaining.
Utica outrebounded Union, 50-41, and shot 32% from the floor while the Dutchwomen shot 35%.
Union returns to action November 25 to host Hartwick.
