Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey defeats Nazareth 2-0, Dutchwomen now 14-3

SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior goaltender Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) posted her third shutout with seven saves and Union finished the regular season 14-3 with a 2-0 non-league win over Nazareth Sunday at Frank Bailey Field. The Golden Flyers fell to 6-11.

Sophomores Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) and Tyler Willey (Stockton NJ) scored second half goals for the Dutchwomen, while Stanford made six in the second period. Nazareth sophomore goaltender Kelsey Evans (Penfield, NY) stopped 12 Union shots, 10 in the first half. The Dutchwomen outshot the Golden Flyers, 19-2 in the first half, but could not solve Evans.

After a scoreless first half, Powers put the Dutchwomen on the board at 47:01. She took a shot from 12 yards out directly in front and the shot was deflected off a Nazareth player in a crowd and went high into the net over Evans. It was Powers' eighth goal of the year.

Nazareth had a chance to tie it when Elise Maryanopolis (Gloversville, NY) came in alone to Stanford's left, but the senior goaltender came out and kicked away the shot by the Golden Flyer with 5:48 remaining to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Willey notched Union's second and insurance goal at 67:54. She and Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) came in on a two-on-none, and after Evans came out and stopped Moran, the Union junior dished over to Willey, who fired it into the open net for her 10th of the season.

Union finished with a 25-11 shot advantage and had 17 corners to Nazareth's three.
Stanford and fellow senior Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) were honored after the final regular season home game of their careers. During their four year careers, Union has won 47 games, the most by any Union senior class in the program's history. This will be the third post season for Hanson and Stanford.

The Dutchwomen open Liberty League Championship play Friday, November 7 with a 2 p.m. semifinal game Friday vs. Skidmore at St. Lawrence.
