CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Dutchwomen's ice hockey team concluded its weekend trip with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the Bright Hockey Center. Senior goaltender
Lundy Day made 41 saves in the contest.
Harvard's Sarah Wilson scored two goals and fellow senior Jenny Brine had a goal and an assist Freshman Alisa Baumgartner and junior Kathryn Farni also scored for the Crimson (3-0-1, 3-0-1 ECAC Hockey), which held a 46-12 advantage in shots. sophomore Kylie Stephens made seven stops.
Harvard was 1-for-3 on the power play and held a 29-21 edge in faceoff wins.
The early action went back and forth until the Dutchwomen were whistled for a penalty about five minutes into the game. Harvard seized the momentum from there and poured on the offense, outshooting Union, 19-4, in the first period.
The Crimson held puck in the Union zone for most of the early power play and continued to work the puck around and apply heavy pressure on Day. The Union goalie made several tough saves following nice Harvard passing plays, but the Crimson broke through on an unassisted effort by Brine. The Harvard senior picked off a Union pass inside the Dutchwomen's blue line, skated wide right around a defender and put a shot off the inside of Day's leg and into the goal.
Harvard added three goals in just over three minutes in the second period. Baumgarter struck first, picking up the puck from sophomore Deborah Conway, circling behind the net, coming out on the left side and shooting high past Day at 5:45 of the second. Wilson scored less than three minutes later, getting a shot past Day after taking the puck Cori Bassett. Brine also assisted on the play.
Farni's goal, Harvard's fourth, came at 8:56. Working the left point on the power play, she one-timed a Katharine Chute shot through the Union penalty kill and into the net for her first score of the year. The Crimson held a 15-3 edge in second-period shots.
The Dutchwomen kept Harvard off the board for much of the third period, but Wilson put the finishing touches on the scoresheet at the 17:46 mark, skating up the left side and shooting over Day's left shoulder to make it 5-0.
The Dutchwomen return to action on Friday, Nov 15 for a 2 p.m. contest at RPI.
