BENNINGTON, VT -- Lance Spratling scored a game high 21 points to lead Southern Vermont College to an 85-76 home win over Union Tuesday night. It was the first victory of the season for the Mountaineers (1-4), while the Dutchmen fell to 2-2 on the season.
Spratling added seven assists and three steals while Deandre Kennedy-Ebron added 19 points. Joe Karnik (17) and Brendan Kordana (15) also starred for the Mountaineers, who shot 59% and had a slight 39-38 rebounding edge.
Steve Madej and
Drew Goldstein led the Dutchmen with 15 points each, and
Joey Lokitis added 13 points with a team best four assists.
Drew Desmarais scored 10 points. Lokitis and
Nick Ciresi each pulled down seven rebounds for Union, which shot 43% from the floor. The hosts were 15 for 27 from the free throw line (56%) and the Dutchmen made just eight of 15 free throws (8 for 15).
Southern Vermont had two 12 point first half leads and took a 43-36 lead into halftime. The home squad led by as many as 14, 61-47 with 13:24 remaining in the second half. But the Dutchmen went on a 14-3 run in the next 3:55 to pull to within three at 64-61, as newcomer
Brett Tessler scored five of those 14 points. But the Mountaineers staged a run of their own to open up a 15 point lead, outscoring the Dutchmen 15-3 in the next three minutes and nine seconds highlighted by four points from Spratling. The 79-64 Southern Vermont lead with 6:20 left was the largest lead of the night.
After playing the first four games away, visiting three states, the Dutchmen open the home season Thursday night at 8 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
