HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite outshooting their hosts, 33-26, the Union College men's hockey team stumbled at Colgate, 8-0, in ECAC Hockey action at Starr Rink Saturday night. The loss drops the Dutchmen to 13-11-5 and 8-6-4 in league play, and into a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings.
Colgate (13-12-5, 7-7-4 ECAC Hockey) carried a three-goal lead into the first intermission, courtesy of Tom Rile, Ethan Cox and Tyler Burton. Riley skated the length of the ice before firing a wrister from the right circle that bounced off of Union netminder
Corey Milan's (Great Barrington, Mass.) glove and over the freshman's shoulder at 10:09. Exactly 50 seconds later, Cox collected a bouncing puck from Fancois Brisebois in the slot and placed it past Milan's left pad. Burton capped the Raiders' first period scoring with his team-leading 16
th goal of the season with less than a minute left in the period. Jesse Winchester slipped the puck ahead to Burton who carried it in the right side of the zone before crossing the puck into the upper left corner of the net.
Union outshot the Raiders in the first frame, 13-8, but Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich thwarted the Dutchmen's attempts.
Stéphane Boileau (Blainville, Que.) fired from the netfront, but Dekanich batted down the puck with his glove. The rebound trickled out to
Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, Alb.) who quickly sent a high shot toward the net, but Dekanich came up with the dramatic save.
Justin Mrazek (Regina, Sask.) replaced Milan in net to start the second period, and was tested right away. After Mrazek made a close-range save, Burton looked to knock in the rebound, but Presizniuk blocked the senior's shot at the near post.
Five minutes into the middle frame, however, Burton connected for his second goal of the night when he tipped in a shot by Jason Fredericks at 5:21. Fredericks collected a pass from Winchester before firing from the left point. Burton was planted at the left post and sneaked it between Mrazek's shoulder and the left post.
The Raiders edged ahead to five-goal lead with 1:34 remaining in the second period with a power-play tally. David McIntyre fed Nick St. Pierre in the slot before the defenseman placed the puck past Mrazek's blocker.
Union started the third period on the power play and went on a 37-second two-man advantage less than a minute into the stanza.
Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, Que.) ripped a shot wide before
Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, Conn.) picked up the puck as it headed toward the blue line. Milnamow fired from the point, but Dekanick stopped the puck at his chest.
Boileau set up
Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, Alb.) midway through the stanza as the pair rushed in with Boileau skating up the left boards. Schreiber trailed behind on the left and Boileau slid the puck toward the crease. Schreiber got a piece of it, but Dekanich made the sliding save with his left leg.
The Dutchmen came alive during a late power play, collecting several shots after Colgate was whistled for too many men on the ice at 12:23. Presizniuk found a Schrieber rebound on the doorstep but again Dekanich was there to stop the Dutchmen.
The Raiders added a pair of late goals, first when Matt Torti knocked in a low-angle pass from Winchester on the power play, and then Mark Anderson fired from the slot and beat Mrazek low past his extended right leg.
Mrazek finished with 13 saves in 40 minutes of relief, while Dekanich earned his third-straight shutout with 32 saves, extending his shutout streak to 212:14, breaking the ECAC Hockey record previously held by Union College goaltender Trevor Koenig '98 (198:44).
The Dutchmen return home to host Clarkson and St. Lawrence on February 22 and 23 in their final home series of the regular season. Both games will be televised on Time Warner Sports, and SportsNet New York will also air Friday's 7 p.m. game against the Golden Knights.
