Dutchwomen lose to St. Lawrence, 58-53

Rachel Ormsby had a big second half for Union.
SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior guard Jamie Wolff (Buffalo, NY) scored a game high 20 points and junior guard Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA) added 16 with seven rebounds to lead St. Lawrence to a 58-53 women's basketball victory at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Saints improved to 16-4 overall and 6-3 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen had a three-game winning streak snapped, falling to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the league.
 
Kim Sikule (Westerlo, NY) added 13 points and a game best five assists for the Saints, who won despite shooting 31% on the night. St. Lawrence shot 17% in the second half, after leading 34-26 at halftime, but the Saints forced 19 Union turnovers while committing only nine for the night. Union was led by Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY), who posted a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She had 12 points and nine rebounds in the second session. Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY) scored 13 points and Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) added 10 points with nine boards for Union.
 
St. Lawrence led by 13 at 43-30 with 13:38 left in the second half, but the hosts went on a 21-7 run in 9:49 to pull to within one, down 51-50, on a three pointer by Tobin. But Union could not tie or take the lead, trailing 52-51 with 2:15 left in the second half. Sikule hit a layup at 1:52 and after a turnover and Union foul, made a free throw with 47 seconds left. Wolff hit the first of two free throws with just 18 seconds left for a 56-51 Saints lead. After a jumper by Rogers pulled Union to within three with six seconds left, Union fouled Sikule, who made both free throws with four ticks left for the 58-53 final.
 
Union hosts Clarkson Saturday for "NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day" at 2 p.m. The day features prizes and player autographs for kids, with free admission for all. St. Lawrence plays at Skidmore Saturday at 2 p.m.
