SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman forward Drew Goldstein (Philadelphia, PA) scored a career high 21 points and added four assists and a pair of blocks to lead Union to a 79-67 home win over Liberty League leader St. Lawrence Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. It was only the second loss in nine league games for the Saints (now 12-8 overall), while the Dutchmen, winners of two straight, improved to 2-7 in the league and 6-13 overall.
Junior forward Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY) scored 17 points and made eight of 10 free throws for the Dutchmen, while senior center and captain Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY) had 15 points and eight boards with two blocks. Joey Lokitis (Norton, MA) scored 11 points with a game and had his second straight game of a season high eight assists.
Tom Wopperer (Manlius, NY) led the Saints with 18 points and Richard Williams (Kingston, NY) scored 14 off the bench. Tyler Wright (Teaneck, NJ) had 10 points and seven rebounds with three steals while Andy Hoercher (Auburn, NY) also scored 10 for the guests. St. Lawrence had 20 turnovers and shot 43% while the Dutchmen shot 44% for the game.
Union trailed 32-28 at the half, and was down by seven at 36-29 with 18:53 remaining in the second. But in the next 6:23, the Dutchmen went on a 21-4 run for a 50-40 lead, featuring eight points by Goldstein. Union led by as many as 17 (64-47 with 7:01 left, and the Saints went on a 17-7 run to pull to within seven with 2:19 to play, yet could not get any closer.
Goldstein has 41 points in his last two contests for the Dutchmen, who shot 55% in the 51-35 second half scoring advantage. St. Lawrence had a 40-35 edge on the boards.
Union hosts Clarkson Saturday for "NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day" at 4 p.m. The day features prizes and player autographs for kids, with free admission for all. St. Lawrence plays at Skidmore Saturday at 4 p.m.
