PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University men's hockey team edged Union, 2-0, in the Dutchmen's regular season finale at Meehan Auditorium Saturday night. Union (15-12-6, 10-7-5) finishes the regular season in fourth place, earning a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey playoffs for the first time in program history. Union will host a quarterfinal series on March 14-16 at Messa Rink.
Brown (6-19-4, 6-13-3) held a 15-7 shot advantage in the first period, but it was Union which held the upper hand in quality chances. Four minutes into the game,
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, Ohio) slid the puck behind the goal line to
Jason Walters (Renfrew, Ont.). Walters briefly held onto the puck before centering to
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, N.J.) in the slot, but Cook's shot bounced off the left post.
Union again found the post late in the frame when
Mike Harr (Norwood, Mass.) fired from the right point during four-on-four action, but his shot careened off the post as the matching penalties were about to expire.
Brown edged ahead in the second period, lighting the lamp while on a five-on-three. Devin Timberlake slid the puck out to Jeff Prough above the left circle before the senior sent the puck across to Sean Hurley low in the right circle. Hurley potted a one-timer at 4:56 for the one-goal lead.
Union had its own five-on-three after the midpoint of the frame, and peppered Brown netminder Dan Rosen with four shots during the 1:23 span.
Michael Beynon (Nepean, Ont.) got things rolling with a blast from the left point, and after several other attempts from the doorstep,
Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, Alb.) looked to plant the puck at the near post, but Rosen got his leg pads on it to end the threat.
Brown added a power-play score late in the third period when Prough fed Ryan Garbutt in the slot for the junior's ninth goal of the season.
Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, Alb.) looked to put Union on the board with just over three minutes left when he wound up to fire from the right point after Stephane Boileau (Blainville, Que.) won the draw back to him in Brown's zone.
Justin Mrazek (Regina, Sask.) made 28 saves in the loss, while Rosen stopped 28 Dutchmen shots in his sixth win of the season.
Union will wait to find out its opponent for the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals on March 14-16 at Messa Rink.
