Messa's four goals pace #8 Dutchwomen to 17-7 win at Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior midfielder Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, NY) scored four goals with an assist and Chelsea Charette (South Hadley, MA) and Allie Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) tallied two each to lead #8 Union to a 17-7 Liberty League women's lacrosse win at Rochester Friday.

With the win, the Dutchwomen improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season, and 5-0 in league play. The Yellowjackets fell to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the league. Union has now won 14 of the last 15 regular season games and is 12-1 in Liberty League regular season play since the start of the 2007 season.

Union's Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) had one goal and two assists. Eight of Union's starters had at least one goal and 12 Dutchwomen scored all together. Goaltender Melissa McDonald (Lynnefield, MA) made 13 saves and allowed seven goals in 60 minutes.

For Rochester, Amanda Case scored two goals and had one assist. Lindsay Dakin scored two goals. Allyson Hogan, Sierra LaVenture-Volz and Mary Kate Hannan scored one goal. Leslie Dube made a dozen saves in 60 minutes.

Charette, Messa, and Jill LaForest (Acton, MA) (from Messa) all scored in the first 5:06. After Hogan scored for Rochester with 24:27 left in the half, Allie (23:58) and Caitlin Cuozzo (22:40) scored 78 seconds apart to ignite a 4-0 Union run in a span of six minutes. Rochester got consecutive goals from Case (from the free position) and Dakin (set up by Case) to pull within 7-3 with just over six minutes to play. Messa struck twice in less than a minute sparking a 4-0 Union run. It was 11-3 at halftime.

The Dutchwomen held a 33-23 shot advantage, 29-20 on goal. Union collected 24 ground balls (Messa had three) and won 16 draws, eight by Caitlin Cuozzo. Rochester had 23 ground balls, and the Yellowjackets won 10 draws.

The Dutchwomen face a tough test Saturday on the road. #8 Union will face defending league title winner Hamilton in Clinton at 3 p.m. The Continentals, who also won today, enter the contest ranked #5 in the IWLCA poll and stand 3-0 in the league, 9-1 overall.
