SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College women's volleyball team, which had received votes in last week's AVCA Division III poll, improved to 12-0 on the season with home victories over Hamilton and Skidmore at the Union Invitational Saturday.
The Dutchwomen downed Hamilton by scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-17. Union completed the sweep and perfect 4-0 weekend by defeating the Thoroughbreds, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-13. Union junior Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player and senior Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) was also named to the All Tournament team.
In the triumph over Hamilton, Ormsby had seven kills, three blocks and 11 digs. Freshman Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY) added eight kills, two blocks and eight digs, and Veronica Mynders (Greenville, NY) posted 10 digs. Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA), this week's Liberty League Co-Player of the Week, produced 35 assists, two blocks and five digs.
Senior Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) had 14 kills and five digs with two blocks against Skidmore. Richards had 11 more kills with seven digs and Ormsby finished the day with 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks in this win. Merinder dished out 38 assists and had 15 digs. Mynders' 13 digs and Bridget Little's (Glenville, NY) six blocks also contributed to Skidmore's defeat.
Union hosts Williams Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
