SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Christine Kemp's overtime goal gave the Skidmore College field hockey team a hard-fought 1-0 win over Union College. It was the Liberty League opener for both teams.
The Thoroughbreds have won three straight to improve to 4-2 (1-0 Liberty), while the Dutchwomen drop their first of the season, falling to 3-1 (0-1 Liberty).
Neither team found the net in the regulation, with Skidmore outshooting the visitors 10-3, including two shots off late second-half penalty corners that were denied by Union goalie
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA).
In overtime, sophomore Lauren McCarthy drove a hard ball from the top of the circle that found Kemp, who tipped it in past Stanford at 71:03 for the game-winner.
Skidmore held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Stanford held the Thoroughbreds scoreless before the overtime, recording seven saves in the contest. Skidmore's Liz Catinella finished with three saves in the net for her first shutout of the season.
Union hosts Wheaton Saturday at 1 p.m. in a game to be played at College Park.
