SCHENECTADY, NY – Behind two second half goals, the Union College field hockey team cruised to a 3-1 victory against Wheaton Saturday. Senior midfielder
Anne Hanson (White River Junction, VT) paced the Dutchwomen with the game-winning goal and two assists.
With the victory, Union improves to 4-1-0, while Wheaton goes to 4-3-0.
Sophomore forward
Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME), who is tied with Hanson for the team lead in points with eight, scored her team-high fourth goal of the season to break the 0-0 tie. The play started with a corner that went to Hanson, who fed it download to Powers at 12:53.
Wheaton quickly answered just over 10 minutes later when freshman forward Cara Cusson (Ashfield, MA) found the ball on the doorstep for her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Hannah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI) fed her the ball through a traffic jam in front.
The momentum shifted back to the Dutchwomen after the half and Union controlled most of the play the rest of the way. Hanson tallied the game-winner at 40:51 when she took a direct pass off a corner from sophomore defender
Lauren Politz (Goffstown, NH). Hanson went low and beat Wheaton goalkeeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA) five hole.
Sophomore defender
Alexandra King (Chester Springs, PA) added an insurance marker at 52:34. Hanson took a pass off a corner try and left it for King from 16 yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Rios (Queensbury, NY), who played the second half, made one save for her first win of the season. Senior goalkeeper
Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) played the opening stanza and also made one save.
Bagley turned away 12 shots and her team added one team save.
Union returns to action Friday, Sept. 26 at St. Lawrence for a 4 p.m. contest.
