Saints down field hockey squad, 2-1 in OT

CANTON, NY -- Junior defender Jen Stetson scored her third goal of the season off a penalty corner with 2:54 gone in overtime to lift St. Lawrence University's field hockey team to a 2-1 Liberty League victory over Union on North Country Field Friday afternoon.

St. Lawrence improved to 4-3 overall and won its Liberty League opener, while Union is now 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League with both of the losses coming in overtime.

The Saints had an edge in play in the first half, outshooting Union 10-5, but the two teams were scoreless at the break as Saint goalie Emilie Lannamann made a diving save on Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) to stop Union's best scoring bid and Dutchwoman goalie Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) had five of her nine stops in the first half.

Union struck quickly to open the second half as Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) and Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) broke in on the Saint goal on the first rush of the half and Moran fed Willey whose shot beat Lannamann to the far corner for the game's first goal just 32 seconds into the second half.

The lead did not last long. The Saints turned around and came right back down the field as sophomore Kristi Onzik took the ball down the sideline and then cut to the goal. While Stanford made the initial save on Onzik's first shot, Onzik controlled the rebound and put it inside the far corner from a tough angle for her second of the year with 1:06 gone in the half to make it a 1-1 game.

It stayed that way the rest of regulation time and the Saints went right to the attack early in the seven-on-seven 15 minute overtime period. Stanford saved a shot by Brooke Maloney 1:58 into the extra period, but the Saints were awarded a penalty corner shortly after and were able to convert for the game winner.

Maloney sent the ball out from the end line and Stetson controlled it, taking a step to clear a shooting lane and sending the ball inside the right post for the game winner at 72:54 for the Saint victory.

St. Lawrence had a 20-15 edge in shots overall and had nine penalty corners to Union's six. Lannamann had six saves to Stanford's six.

St. Lawrence will host Skidmore while Union travels to Hamilton for Liberty League games on Saturday.
