POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – A goal in the 32nd minute by freshman forward
Jessica Strang (Rotterdam, NY) lifted the Union women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Vassar in the Liberty League opener. The Dutchwomen improve to 6-1-1 and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League, while Vassar goes to 4-3-0 and 0-1-1.
Strang's team-leading fourth goal and her first career game-winning tally came at 32:31 on a shot from 12 yards out. The goal, which was her third in two games, was set up by senior
Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT) picked up the assist, sending a ball into the box that was batted around, the slick conditions making it difficult for Vassar to clear. In the crowd, Strang managed to poke a shot past Brewer keeper Anne Hutchinson.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Abby Stohler (West Hartford, CT) posted her third shutout of the season and is now 3-1-1 with a 0.48 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. Stohler turned aside seven saves, including five in the second half.
Union posted 11 shots and six corner kicks, while Vassar recorded 12 shots and three corner kicks. Hutchinson made five saves.
The Dutchwomen are back at it Saturday when they take to the pitch at 5 p.m. at RPI.
