SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union women's volleyball team continued a stellar season with the Championship of the SUNY Oneonta Invitational Saturday. The Dutchwomen downed the hosts by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-16, after sweeping SUNY Plattsburgh, 25-9, 25-22 and 22-16 earlier in the day.
In the opening win over Plattsburgh, Union was paced by 15 digs by Veronica Mynders (Greenville, NY) and 10 kills by Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY). Union also got 34 assists from Jen Merinder (Andover, MA) and Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY) added five kills and three blocks. Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) recorded three blocks with five kills.
Merinder had 33 assists in the victory over Oneonta, and was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Mynders had 28 digs and Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY), who joined Merinder on the All-Tournament Team, blocked four with six kills. Schumaker had eight kills with her four blocks and Richards (12 kills) and LaSpina (10 kills) also helped in the victory.
The Dutchwomen compete at the Tufts Invitational October 3 and 4 in Boston.
