Balanced team effort leads men's soccer to 4-0 win over John Jay

SCHENECTADY, NYA balanced attack and two goals in each half helped the Dutchmen soccer team to it's second shutout of the season and a 4-0 victory against John Jay on Saturday at the Union Men's Soccer Classic. With the win the Dutchmen improve to 3-1-0, while the Bloodhounds go to 0-3-0.

Two failed clears on corner kicks led to Union's first two markers. Junior midfielder Ryan Banagan took the first corner and junior defender Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT) netted his first goal of the season and the first of the game from 10 yards out from the right side only 1:42 into the match.

Sophomore midfielder Dan Phakos' (Southampton, MA) corner led to the second goal. Junior forward Jack Scott (Huntington, NY) benefited from the Bloodhound miscue at 33:04. The goal was his second of the season.

Senior midfielder Alan Fox (Pittsford, NY) and the Dutchmen were denied a three goal advantage during the 15th minute when his shot from 25 yards out caromed off the right post. Fox start the shot well outside the post and curved it right into the iron.

Senior goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) and sophomore Ryan Green (Santa Barbara, CA) shared the shutout. Kramer made two saves, while Green went untested.

Union nearly added to its lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Riter hit the post on a short-side shot. During the same possession Scott went over the net on a pass from Riter.
