SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Drew Desmarais made a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Union men's basketball team a 73-72 win at Skidmore Tuesday night at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Dutchmen, now 8-3 overall and winners of five straight, defeated Skidmore (5-7) in the league opener for both squads. Desmarais had a season high 22 points and
Steve Madej also scored 22 for the Dutchmen.
Desmarais pulled down a defensive rebound at 1:52 and 14 seconds later,
Drew Goldstein tied the game at 70-70. With 36 seconds left, Terron Victoria regained the Skidmore lead with a basket for a 72-70 lead. After a Skidmore foul, Madej missed the first free throw attempt but made the second with nine seconds left in regulation. The Thoroughbreds, now clinging to a 72-71 lead, turned the ball over with seven seconds left, setting up Desmarais' game-winner.
Jeff Altimar scored 18 points and Jon Douglas scored 10 for Skidmore, while Bobby Langford had a game high 11 rebounds for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds shot 39% for the evening.
Goldstein had 11 points and had a team high eight rebounds.
Matt Covucci pulled down seven boards for Union, which led 36-35 at the half. The Dutchmen shot 52% for the game while Skidmore outrebounded the Dutchmen, 40-31.
Union hosts Clarkson in Liberty League play Friday night at 8 p.m.
