SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman forward
Lauren Cromartie scored early in the second period to give Union a 1-0 lead, but the Dutchwomen couldn't outlast #4 St. Lawrence in a 4-1 loss on Saturday at Messa Rink. The loss drops Union to 2-20-3 overall (0-12-1 ECAC Hockey), while SLU improves to 16-5-3 overall and 10-1-1 in the league.
Union's defense was impressive in the first period as it kept the offensive-minded Saints off the board in spite of being outshot 15-5. Just over four minutes into the second period, Cromartie stole the puck near center ice, skated hard toward the net, peeled off to the left and scored on a low angle shot from beneath the circle.
The Dutchwomen's lead was short-lived. At the 6:39 mark, Kirsten Roach scored to tie the game, and less than a minute later, Vanessa Emond gave SLU a one-goal advantage. Before the game reached the halfway point, St. Lawrence had taken a 3-1 lead thanks to Britni Smith's power-play goal at 9:13.
Although Union enjoyed more than four consecutive power-play minutes later in the third period, including several instances of a two-man advantage as SLU drew three straight penalties, the Dutchwomen were unable to get anything else past Saint goaltender Brittony Chartier. St. Lawrence secured its victory with a 5-on-3 power-play goal by Alison Domenico with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
