Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Despite Comeback Dutchmen Lose 3-1

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, MA –
The Dutchmen ice hockey team's attempt to sweep the season series against Harvard fell short with a 3-1 setback on Friday at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center. Senior left-winger Matt Cook registered his sixth goal of the season as Union goes to 12-12-1 overall and 5-8-0 in the conference. Harvard improves to 5-11-4 and 5-6-4 in ECAC Hockey.

Cook's goal was setup by redshirt freshman Luke Cain and sophomore Stéphane Boileau. The point was Cain's fifth of the season, while it gave Boileau his 19th.

Union tried to rally in the third period, outshooting Harvard 9-5, but its efforts fell short.

Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan turned away 22 shots, including eight in the first, 10 in the second and four in the third. At the other end freshman Matt Hoyle made 29 saves.

Both teams exchanged chances early as Harvard sent two opportunities off the side of the net and Union produced three shots, one on goal, during a power play at 9:16.

The Crimson were unable to convert on a man advantage between 11:04 and 13:04, but cashed in six seconds after Union returned to full strength. After a scramble in front and a couple of Milan saves, junior Doug Rogers poked in his fourth goal of the season.

Boileau nearly tied the game during the first 1:30 of the second period, after sophomore left-winger Adam Presizniuk forced a turnover in the offensive end, giving the Dutchmen a 2-on-1. Presizniuk dished to Boileau atop the crease, but Hoyle got his right pad on the try.

Special teams took over from there. Harvard increased its lead to 2-0 with a deflection power-play goal by sophomore Pier-Olivier Michaud at 7:42. The goal, his third of the year, was setup by sophomore Michael Biega and Rogers.

The Dutchmen responded at 9:15 with the man advantage. A long pass out of the defensive end found Boilea cruising into the Crimson end. He pulled up and hit Cain, who found Cook for a one-timer. The goal was his third power-play goal of the season.

Union dominated the majority of the third period, outshooting Harvard 8-1 before the Crimson went on its sixth power play of the game at 12:47. Senior defenseman Brendan Milnamow, senior forward Chris Potts, junior forward Jason Shaffer and sophomore defenseman Brock Matheson remained on the ice for the majority of the kill and kept their composure, shutting the home team down and give the Dutchmen a fighting chance heading into the final minutes.

Union finished with 30 shots and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Harvard, who scored an empty net goal with 44 seconds remaining, produced 25 shots and was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

The Dutchmen travel to Dartmouth on Saturday, Jan. 31 for a 7 p.m. game.
