SCHENECTADY, NY - Union College held the Rensselaer women's basketball team to just 28.8% shooting and the Dutchwomen defeated the Red Hawks, 74-47, in a Liberty League game at the Viniar Center. With the loss, RPI falls out of first place, dropping to 5-2 in the league and 13-4 overall. Union remains in first place at 6-1 and 12-5.
Michelle Rogers led the Dutchwomen with a double double of 14 points and 11 rebounds along with six assists, while
Maria Tobin scored a game high 19 points and
Lauren McCormick hit for 17 points.
Selin Whitham added 12 points in the win.
Senior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT) led
Rensselaer is scoring with 14 points. Wetmore finished with 10 and senior guard Whitney Coleman (
Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) had nine points and a game high 13 rebounds.
In the first half, the Dutchwomen held RPI to just 25.8% (8 of 31) shooting from the field while making 41.9% (13 of 31) of their shots. The Red Hawks were led by freshman Sarah Wetmore''s (Sudbury, MA) eight first half points. The Red Hawks and Dutchwomen opened the game evenly as the contest was tied 8-8 just over five minutes into the first half.
Union then went on an 18-4 run over the next 10:02 to take a 26-12 lead. RPI pulled to within 10 points at the half, 33-23.
Rensselaer pulled to within five points just two minutes into the second half but Tobin quickly answered a Kerry Hayes (Nashua, NH) three pointer with a long one of her own and the Dutchwomen never trailed by less than six points the rest of the game. In fact, they outscored the Red Hawks 39-17 the rest of the game. The Dutchwomen connected on 49.0% of its shots, making 25 of 51.
Union is back in action the on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. to host Skidmore, while RPI hosts Hamilton at 6 p.m. Friday night.
