ROCHESTER, NY -- Union's Lizzy Moran scored 4:38 into sudden death overtime on Saturday afternoon to defeat the University of Rochester, 3-2, in field hockey at Fauver Stadium.
The Dutchwomen improved to 9-6 overall and evened their Liberty League record at 3-3. Rochester had a seven-match winning streak snapped. The Yellowjackets are 10-6 overall, also 3-3 in the Liberty League. Union now can clinch a playoff spot with a win at William Smith Sunday.
Both teams remain tied for the final Liberty League playoff berth. On Sunday, Rochester hosts Skidmore College while Union visits William Smith. If the teams remain tied after Sunday's games and no other team passes them, Union holds the tiebreaker by virtue of today's win.
Kelsey Powers put Union ahead at 20:14. She collected a pass from Isabel Zellweger and drove a two-yard shot past Danielle Pearson. Bethany Crowe gave the Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead at 30:15. Powers faked a shot, then circled a defender. She passed to Andrea Meyers who slid it across to Crowe for the goal.
Rochester drew within 2-1 barely a minute after the Crowe goal. Christi Bottcher put the ball into the circle and Anna Dobrzynski fired the ball past Sarah Rios at 31:33.
The Yellowjackets applied steady pressure for the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but couldn't crack through the defense. Rios made five of her eight saves in the second period. With 12:32 left in the match, Shelby Hall got to a ball after a scramble following a penalty corner and angled it just inside the right post.
Moran's winner came on a counterattack. A Rochester foul gave the Dutchwomen the ball just over midfield. A pass found Moran outside the circle on the left side. She cut into the circle, angled left to right, and as Pearson charged off the line, Moran placed an eight-yarder into the woodwork for the gamewinner.
Pearson made two saves. Rios had eight. Rochester held a 15-7 edge in shots and a 15-7 edge on penalty corners.
Union's Sunday game at William Smith is at 1 p.m.
