GENEVA, NY -- Kelsey Powers scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Union field hockey team to a 3-1 victory at William Smith in the final Liberty League game of the season Sunday. With the victory, the Dutchwomen finished 4-3 in the league and clinched fourth place for the final berth in the Liberty League playoffs.
Union, 9-7 overall, wraps up the regular season at New Paltz Friday. The Herons fell to 2-5 overall in the league and 8-8 overall.
The Dutchwomen trailed 1-0 when Annie Kietzman notched her ninth of the year for the Herons at 7:54. She took a pass from Kiersten Hamilton through the circle. The Dutchwomen nearly tied it at 34:39 but a penalty stroke by
Tyler Willey was stopped by Taryn Little.
Union notched the tying tally 4:41 into the second half. Powers took a shot that was stopped by Little but converted her own rebound for her fifth of the year. At 60:54, the junior scored the eventual game winner. Willey took the corner and fed Powers to the left of the net and her sixth of the season made it 2-1 Union.
Just 30 seconds later,
Lizzy Moran added insurance for the Dutchwomen with her sixth of the year. Powers sent it to Moran who put it in to the left post.
Union goaltender
Sarah Rios made 17 saves as the Herons had a 29-12 shot advantage. Little stopped seven for the Herons, who had a 15-3 advantage in corners.
The Dutchwomen, who defeated William Smith last season, won for the third time in the 34 meetings against the Herons in the series.
