Football Dutchmen now 2-0 in league after 21-17 home win over WPI

Junior running back Chris Coney rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore defensive end Michael Miller had two and a half sacks for Union College in a 21-17 Liberty League football victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday night at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchmen are the only 2-0 team in the league and are 3-1 overall, while the Engineers fell to 0-2 in the league and 3-2 overall.

Junior linebacker John Peters had a team 10 tackles for the Dutchmen while sophomore quarterback Andrew Connolly completed 12 of his 19 passes for 237 yards and did not throw an interception. Senior wide receiver Jared Gourrier had three catches for 71 yards and Union outgained the Engineers, 431 to 279. Coney recorded his ninth career 100 yard rushing game and added 66 receiving yards.

WPI was paced by junior linebacker Jack Mulhern (Worcester, MA), who had a game high 16 tackles, including two for losses. Senior quarterback Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) was 13 for 23 with a touchdown and 162 yards, and also added 61 yards on 17 rushes. R.C. Grady (Shirley, MA) had 44 yards in receiving on three catches with a score and Scott Brady (Westboro, MA) caught 49 yards on two receptions.

The Engineers scored the lone points of the first quarter with a 25 yard field goal by Cody Beckel (Jupiter, FL). It caped an eight play, 72 yard drive that consumed 3:44. The Dutchmen took the lead for good when Coney ran in for a one yard score 3:46 into the second quarter for the 7-3 lead. It was his fifth straight rush on the drive, and he had 29 yards of the 69 yard, 10 play drive that took 5:28. After a four and out, the Dutchmen got the ball back and a drive that started at their own 15 was capped when Coney ran in from three yards at 5:51 for the 14-3 advantage. The drive featured a 24 yard run up the left side by Connolly on a third-and-seven from the WPI 36.

WPI pulled to within four with 2:04 left in the half. Swanton found Grady for a two yard scoring pass to complete a nine play, 64 yard drive in 3:41. The QB passed for 43 yards on the drive, and the score remained 14-10 at the half.

The second half featured sporadic torrential rains that may have contributed to the scoreless third quarter. Yet the only turnover of the quarter came when #Richard Sixto, Jr.# intercepted a Swanton pass at the Union seven yard line to end an eight play, 46 yard drive and cease a potential scoring drive. Union did start a drive with 3:51 left in the third that eventually produced points early in the fourth quarter. coney rushed for a total of 50 yards on five plays during the drive that culminated with Gourrier's scoring from two yards out with four seconds gone on the first play of the fourth quarter. It was 21-10 Union.

WPI made it a four point game again at 21-17 with a 14 yard run by Swanton with 12 minutes remaining in the period. The scoring drive was five plays with 69 yards in 2:52. The final chance for the Engineers came on a fourth and three from their own 20, but a Swanton pass was incomplete and Union took over with 1:11 remaining.

The Dutchmen have now won 13 of the last 14 meetings in the series, and Union leads the all time series, 29-9.

Union hosts Hobart on October 10 at 2 p.m. while WPI hosts Merchant Marine at 4 p.m.
