Manna's OT Goal Completes Comeback; Advances Union into Championship Game

The Union College men's soccer team rallied with less than five minutes to go in regulation and then junior forward #John Manna# scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute to give the Dutchmen a 3-2 victory at top-seeded Rensselaer on Wednesday. Union finds itself in the Liberty League Championship for the second consecutive season and will travel to second-seeded Hobart on Saturday (time is TBD). The Dutchmen, who are now 11-6-5, have handed the sixth-ranked Engineers (13-2-2) their only two losses of the season.

Manna's goal, which was his second of the game, came on a rebound attempt after junior defender #Nicky Hoberman# had his header blocked. Manna sent his shot off the left post and behind RPI goalkeeper Alex Penny.

After leading 1-0 at the half, the Dutchmen trailed 2-1 in the 85th minute, but an own goal gave Union the opening it needed. At 85:28, sophomore defender #Kevin Giron# sent the ball into the box, Penny attempted to punch it away, but the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Manna scored Union's first goal at 23:47. The goal began with a throw in from senior defender #Brendan Steiner# just inside RPI end. The toss traveled 20-plus yards before landing inside the box where Manna sent a roller into the lower-left third at 23:47. The goal was Manna's fifth of the season, while Steiner picked up his first assist and seventh point.

Union came out firing in the first half, out chancing the Engineers. Steiner's free kick from the opposite end found freshman forward #Sebastiaan Jansen#'s head. The ball bounced towards the net, but just out of the senior forward #Jack Scott#'s reach with in the opening 10 minutes.

During the 15th minute, Jansen took a one-touch shot from 12-yards out after senior midfielder #Kyle Riter# sent a corner kick off Steiner's head. Jansen's try was blocked, point blank.

RPI freshman midfielder Tom Kelly produced the equalizer (1-1) with a header off a corner kick and assist from senior midfielder Michael Long at 47:24.

Kelly netted his second goal at 62:20 after cashing in on his own rebounded for his seventh goal of the season.

RPI outshot Union, 18-9, and held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks. Sophomore goaltender Adam Margulies (Newtown, CT) made nine saves for his ninth win of the year. Penny turned away four saves for the Engineers.
