Utica wins home women's basketball game vs. Union

Jessica Berry scored a game high 25 points and had nine rebounds and five steals for Utica in a 60-40 non-league women's basketball game at the Clark Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Pioneers now stand 7-2 on the season while Union, which closes out the 2009 portion of the schedule, falls to 1-6.

Stephanie Nara scored 14 points with five assists and Justin Karst had nine points and five boards. Devon Croll had eight points, four assists and four steals for Utica.

Union junior Lauren McCormick had a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She made all four of her free throws. Megan Clark pulled down nine rebounds and Shayla Madden scored nine points for the Dutchwomen.

Utica had a 34-27 lead at halftime but allowed just 13 second half points, as the Dutchwomen shot 17% in the second 20 minutes. Union was held to 30% for the night while the Pioneers shot 40%. Union outrebounded Utica, 40-36.

The only Union lead was an opening basket by Rachel Titcomb. The Dutchwomen were within 10 at 37-27 with 18:06 remaining in the second half, but the Pioneers went on a 16-7 run for a 53-24 lead with 9:26 to go. 

Union is idle until January 2, when the Dutchwomen take on the host school at William Paterson's tournament. The Dutchwomen will face New Paltz or Susquehanna the next day.
