Dutchwomen clinch Liberty League top tourney seed with 70-50 win over William Smith

Maria Tobin broke the single season three point mark.
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Maria Tobin scored 17 points with nine rebounds and broke the single season three point field goals made record in Union's 70-50 women's basketball win over William Smith at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Dutchwomen, 11-2 in the Liberty League, clinched the top seed and thus will host next weekend's league tournament. Union is 17-6 overall. The Herons (13-11 overall) fell to 7-6 and are now tied with Skidmore and Hamilton for fourth place and the final tourney berth with one regular season game remaining.

Tobin hit a three pointer with 9:42 remaining in the second half, her fifth of the game. That basket broke her own Union single season record of 68 set in her sophomore season (2006-07). Michelle Rogers scored 13 points and added eight rebounds while Lauren McCormick and Selin Whitham scored 10 points each. Whitham dished out four assists for the Dutchwomen.

Kristen Kush (Fulton, NY) scored 12 points and Latasha Coney (Lyons, NY) joined Tobin for a game-high nine rebounds along with five assists for William Smith. The Herons also got seven points off the bench from Julie Hooper (Delmar, NY).

Union had a 42-34 rebounding advantage and shot 47% for the game while the Herons shot 36%. Union hit 39% of thre three point attempts while the Herons were held to 17% shooting from beyond the arc.

The Dutchwomen led 29-21 at halftime, and the Herons were within four, 40-36 with 15:14 left in the second half after a jumper by Hooper. But in the next 7:03, the Dutchwomen went on a 16-2 run for a
56-38 lead with 8:11 left. Tobin was hot during that run with three of her three pointers. Union's largest lead was 20 three times the rest of the way, including the final.

Union has a one game lead over second place RPI, but despite tomorrow's results, the Dutchwomen would win a tie-breaker with the Red Hawks because Union was 2-0 against third place, 9-4 St. Lawrence (RPI was 1-1 vs. the Saints this season).

William Smith had a showdown at Skidmore tomorrow at 2 p.m., while both teams will have interest in Union's 2 p.m. home game against Hamilton.
