SCHENECTADY – In her final game in a Union uniform, senior goaltender
Lundy Day made 36 saves as her Dutchwomen lost to Cornell, 8-0, on Senior Day, Saturday, Feb. 21, at Messa Rink. Union finishes the season with a 2-28-3 overall record and a 0-20-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play. With the win, the Big Red secures the eighth seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs. Cornell enters the post-season with a 12-12-5 overall record and 8-9-5 mark in the conference.
Rebecca Johnston led Cornell's offense with a hat trick plus two assists for five points on the afternoon. Catherine White contributed two goals and three assists, while Chelsea Karpenko had two goals and one helper.
Cornell netted its first goal on the power play 13:20 into the first period. White found the back of the net after receiving the puck from Liz Zorn. In the second period, the Big Red scored early and often, with its first goal coming 12 seconds into the session. Cornell tacked on four more during the period, including a shorthanded score by Laura Danforth at the 11:52 mark. Karpenko made it 7-0 2:17 into the third period, and Johnston finished her hat trick with the final goal of the game, which came 5:46 into the final frame.
Cornell finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play. Freshman goaltender Amanda Mazzotta earned the win after making 15 saves.
After the game, the Dutchwomen honored the team's two seniors, Day, a candidate for the Patty Kazmaier Award, and captain
Stephanie Gilbert.
