Dutchmen's Season Ends with 3-1 Loss At #11 Princeton

BOX SCORE

PRINCETON, NJ -- The Union College men's ice hockey team's run to its first ever appearance in the ECAC Hockey Championship weekend came to an end with a 3-1 loss at Princeton on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The loss came during the decisive game three of the quarterfinal round. The Dutchmen finish the season with a 19-17-3 record, marking the fourth winning season in Division I program history. Third-seeded and No. 11 Princeton (22-10) will face second-seeded and No. 12 Cornell during the semifinal round.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Union rebounded in the second period and outshot Princeton, 16-7. Sophomore forward Andrew Buote scored his third goal of the season and the playoffs when he cleaned up on a rebound at the 15:41 mark of the second. Sophomore forward John Simpson and senior forward Chris Potts each had assists. The point was Simpson's 15th of the season, while Potts enjoyed his 11th of the year.

In an attempt to erase a two goal deficit late, the Dutchmen elected to go with a six skater before a penalty put the team down a man. Despite applying pressure late, the Tigers held on for the victory thanks to some big stops by junior goaltender Zane Kalemba.

In the first and with a player from both sides in the box, Princeton senior Brett Wilson made it 1-0 only 56 seconds into the game. Wilson started a fast break and fed to senior Lee Jubinville for a quick shot. The puck fell behind sophomore goaltender Corey Milan and Wilson slide the puck over the line.

The momentum remained with Princeton as they jumped up, 2-0, 1:12 later when junior Dan Bartlett registered his third goal of the season. Junior Brad Schroeder and sophomore Mike Kramer earned assist on the play.

Jubinville got his name on the scoresheet again, putting the Tigers up, 3-0, 6:34 into the first when Wilson forced a turnover and Jubinville cashed in on the shorthanded breakaway attempt.

The Dutchmen threatened with a power-play opportunity in the final third of the first period. Senior defenseman Lane Caffaro struck the crossbar with a wrist shot in the slot, and Kalemba robbed sophomore forward John Simpson with a diving arm save.

Despite being outshot 13-8 in the opening period, Union started to control play during the final few minutes and outshot Princeton, 7-0, from the 16:00 mark until the horn.

Milan finished the game with 30 saves, while Kalemba turned away 38 shots.

The 2008-09 campaign ends with Union posting a school record 19 wins and Milan was between the pipes for each one, setting a school record. Sophomore forward Adam Presizniuk ends his sophomore year after registering the most points by a Dutchmen in a single season (38). His 16 goals ranks tied for seventh all-time.

Defenseman Lane Caffaro ends his collegiate career as the ninth leading scorer with 79 points, while forward Matt Cook is tied for tenth with 77 points.
