SCHENECTADY, NY – Behind a game-high four goals by junior
Andrew Higgins the Union College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 14-2 season-opening victory against Babson on Saturday at Frank Bailey Field. In all, the Dutchmen received goals from 10 different student-athletes to go to 1-0-0. Babson moves to 0-3-0.
Sophomore
Brendan Kinnane also registered four points with a goal and three assists, while junior
Christopher Jacobson registered three points, including two goals. Junior
Scott Garibaldi and freshman
Ethan Meyer also produced three points. Garibaldi notched three assists, while Meyer had a goal and two assists.
Union unloaded 42 shots, including 27 on goal, while limiting Babson to 24 tries, including 14 on net. The Dutchmen nabbed 48 groundballs to the Beavers 29 and won 16-of-21 face-offs.
The Dutchmen controlled the play early and Jacobson potted the first goal of the 2009 campaign on 1:51 into the game on a play setup by Meyer. Higgins made it 2-0 with 9:29 remaining in the first.
Union began separating itself from its opponent in the second with four unanswered goals, including two by Higgins. Kinnane scored with one second remaining to send the game into halftime at 7-1.
Three goals between the eight minute mark and the four minute mark for Union increased its lead to 10-1, but Babson senior E.J. Peterson scored his second goal of the game 58 ticks into the second half to make it 10-2.
Babson sophomore Mike Saucier and senior Max Owen split the game in goal for the Beavers. Saucier made six stops, while Owen had seven.
The Dutchmen return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 11 for a 4 p.m. game against SUNY Oneonta.
