POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Despite a first half comeback that saw the Vassar women's lacrosse team score four straight goals to close the gap to 6-5 at halftime, the Brewers saw Union College answer with eight unanswered goals to start the second half, and lost to the No. 14 ranked Dutchwomen, 19-8, in Liberty League play at blustery Weinberg Field. Union's Kristin Joyce tallied five second half goals and six total, while Vassar sophomore attacks Allie Morgan and Sarah Warner each had three goals.
Vassar dropped its fourth straight Liberty League game and falls to 3-6, 0-4 on the season. The Brewers will host SUNY Farmingdale on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. Union wins its second straight league contest and improves to 4-2, 2-0. The Dutchwomen host Skidmore on April 7.
Union held a slim 6-5 lead starting the second half, but stormed ahead, scoring eight goals in the first ten minutes. Joyce started the second half assault for Union, netting two goals in less than three minutes to the Dutchwomen an 8-5 lead. The offensive barrage continued, as Union got six more goals from five players, including two more by Joyce.
Vassar sophomore attack Sarah Warner finally stopped the Union barrage, scoring with 17:33 to play, cutting the Union lead to 14-6. Warner scored another goal, her 22nd of the season, with 10:41 to play and sophomore attack Moe Byrne added a goal less than a minute later. Union, however ended the game with three straight goals for the 19-8 win.
Early in the first half, Union methodically controlled possession and got off to a 3-0 lead on a goal by Joyce and two more by junior attack Jill LaForest. The Dutchwomen increased their lead to 6-1 with 8:01 to play in the first half and was dominating the action. Vassar roared back with four straight goals including one by senior attack Christine Eaccarino to end the half by reducing the Union lead to 6-5.
Eight different players scored for Union, which was led by Joyce's six goals and three apiece for sophomore midfielder Melissa Hine and LaForest. Hine also tallied five assists. Eaccarino and Byrne were the only two other Brewers to score, and Byrne also added two assists.
Vassar sophomore goalie Nicole Engelhardt made five stops in the game. Union sophomore Cat Ruggiero had six saves.
