Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Moran scores two, assists on third in 3-0 field hockey win vs. RPI

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY --
Lizzy Moran scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Union College field hockey team to a 3-0 Liberty League win over RPI Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchwomen, 3-3 overall, evened their league record to 1-1 while the Engineers fell to 0-7 overall and 0-1 after their league opener.

All of the scoring came in the second half of the contest, and Moran helped lead a Union attack that produced a 17-6 shot advantage. Union goalkeeper Sarah Rios made two stops to post her second shutout of the season. RPI netminder Sarah Burcher (Lanexa, VA) made 12 saves in her first start of 2009.

Union had an 8-6 shot advantage in the first half while RPI had 12 of the 14 corners in the first 35 minutes of play. But the Dutchwomen broke the ice when Moran notched her first of the year at 51:53. She took a feed from Tyler Willey and shot from the right side of the goal from approximately eight yards out for the 1-0 home lead. Just under seven minutes later, (at 58:39), Andrea Meyers took a corner to the right of the RPI cage and fed Moran around 15 yards out. Moran stopped the pass then wristed a high floating shot over the defenders and the keeper at 58:39 for the second score.

The Dutchwomen capped the scoring with just 38 seconds remaining in the second half. This time it was Moran who set up the play, from the left side of the net passing to Willey, who put it into the open right side for her team leading third tally of the season.

After Union had all five corners in the second half, RPI finished with a 12-7 advantage in that department.

Union will host Vassar Saturday at 2 p.m. while RPI plays at Skidmore Saturday, also at 2 p.m.
