Dutchwomen field hockey squad shuts out Vassar, 4-0

Freshman Lauren Winchell scored two goals and Union completed a weekend sweep of Liberty League opponents with a 4-0 home victory over Vassar Saturday at Frank Bailey Field. The Duchwomen, 4-3 overall, are 2-1 in the league after weekend wins over RPI and Vassar. The Brewers fell to 0-2 in the league.

Tyler Willey and isabel Zellweger also scored for the Dutchwomen while goalkeeper Sarah Rios recorded her second shutout in two days and third on the season. She made two saves on the day. Rios now has a streak of 141 minutes and 32 seconds without allowing a goal.

The Dutchwomen outshot the Brewers, 13-2, and had a 9-2 corners advantage. Vassar starting goalkeeper Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills, CA) made six saves in nearly 45 minutes while freshman Rachel Clarkin-Breslin (Litchfield, CT) stopped three in over 25 minutes of play.

Winchell opened the scoring 5:55 into the game when she converted a pass through a crowd from Lizzy Moran for the 1-0 Union lead. The Dutchwomen took a 2-0 lead into the half as Winchell notched her fourth of the season at 25:42. The freshman took a rebound off a save and put home a shot inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.

Willey's fourth of the year made it 3-0 for the home team at 44:47. Andrea Meyers made a pass from the baseline to the top and Willey's low drive to the right of the keeper found the net. Zellweger wrapped up the scoring with her second of the year at 61:09. Her pass from the left corner heading out in front was deflected by defenders in front into the Vassar goal.

Union will play at Castleton State on Tuesday, September 29 at 7 p.m. Vassar plays at RPI Wednesday at 4 p.m.
