ROCHESTER, NY -- Justin Gallo caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Drew Connolly with 10 seconds left to carry visiting Union College to a 28-21 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium Saturday night. The Dutchmen marched 85 yards in six plays for the winning score after stopping Rochester in a fourth-and-short at the Union 15 in the final minute.
Connolly completed 16 of 27 passes for 325 yards and two TDs. He was sacked one and intercepted once. Gallo caught seven passes for 146 yards. Chris Coney led the Dutchmen (2-1, 1-0 Liberty League) with 99 yards rushing on 22 carries. He surpassed the 2,000-yard career rushing total, becoming the 10th Dutchman to record the feat, and now has 2,064 career yards.
Rochester (0-3, 0-1 Liberty League) took its only lead at 21-20 on a six-yard TD run by Clarence Onyiriuka and the extra point from Zachary White-Stellato with 4:03 left. The Yellowjackets drove 70 yards in 10 plays for the go-ahead score. Braezen Subick completed a 15-yard pass to Tony Messana on fourth-and-four at the Union 21 to keep the drive going. Onyiriuka scored on the next play.
Connolly threw two incompletions, then was sacked by Chris Bickford back to the four. Blaise Ancona punted and R.J. Napadano (McQuaid) returned the punt 11 yards to the Union 34. Onyiriuka carried five times, moving the ball down to the Union 15 where UR faced fourth-and-one. Subick tried a keeper, but was stacked up by the center of the defense for no gain.
Facing 3rd-and-10 at his own 29, Connolly escaped a potential sack and found Chris Vasquez open down the left sideline. He was knocked out of bounds by Bickford at the UR 28. Connolly hit Gallo for 18 yards down to the 10, then found him in the left side of the end zone for a TD. He threw a two-point conversion to Gallo in the back of the end zone.
Ancona kicked off and the Yellowjackets tried the lateral play, with seven different players touching the ball before Union finally got the game-ending tackle.
Onyiriuka rushed 42 times for 180 yards and one TD. He also caught two passes for 15 yards and a TD. Subick was 19 of 30 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once and sacked once.
John Peters led all tacklers with 13 solo tackles and nine assists for Union. His 22 tackles tied his own school record set in his sophomore season, 2007 vs. Springfield. Eric Baxter had five tackles and three assists. Bill Campi had six solo stops and three assists for the Yellowjackets. Trenten Tully had three solos and five assists.
Union returns home for a 6 p.m. contest next Saturday, October 3 against WPI. The game will be “NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day# with children 12 and under admitted free with a paid adult admission.
