ONEONTA, NY -- Erika VanValkenburg had 53 assists and Rachel Ormbsy posted 19 kills in two matches as the Union College volleyball team opened the season at the Hartwick Invitational Friday. The Dutchwomen defeated Oswego in three games but lost to St. Lawrence in four games.
In the win over the Great Lakers, VanValkenburg recorded 26 assists, while Orsmby had 10 kills.
Eve Richards added eight kills and
Bridget Little blocked five along with five kills. Union was victorious by scores of 25-18, 25-3 and 25-14.
The Saints came back for a four game win over the Dutchwomen later Friday night. Union won the opener 25-9, but lost the next three by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-13. Orsmby led the way with nine kills and newcomer
Nora Wood added eight kills. VanValkenburg dished out 27 assists while 2008 All-American
Veronica Mynders finished with 24 digs. Little added five blocks.
Union faces RIT Saturday at 10 a.m. and will conclude play later in the day against an opponent to be announced.
