Hobart downs Dutchmen, 64-50

Freshman Rezin Davis (Hughesville, PA) scored 15 points to lead Hobart to a 64-50 men's basketball victory at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen improved to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen fell to 5-8, and 1-2 in league play.

Freshman forward Sean Peer (Albany, NY) scored 12 points with a game hgh seven rebounds and freshman guard Stefan Thompson (Syracuse, NY) added 12 points for the Statesmen. Junior guard Tim Llwellyn (York, PA) dished out a game high five assists.

Union was led by Rusmir Dzanko, who scored 13 points, and Matt Covucci had eight points. Four Union players had four rebounds each, while Hobart had a 38-31 rebounding advantage. Hobart shot 38% for the game while the Dutchmen shot 41%, but the Statesmen 10 of their 12 free throws for an 83% mark from the charity stripe.

Hobart jumped out to a 20-11 lead 9:10 into the contest, and had a 39-19 lead at halftime. Hobart forced 13 turnovers during that period, and outscored the Dutchmen 13-2 off turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Union was within 17 at 43-26 after a three point play by Dzanko with 16:44 left in the second half. But the Statesmen got two straight three pointers from Davis for a 49-26 lead with 14:28 left, the largest lead of the game for Hobart. Union freshman Alex Haines scored the final four points of the game to provide the 14 point margin, as many subs were able to see action in the final minutes.

Union returns home next weekend for Liberty League games against St. Lawrence (Friday, September 22 at 8 p.m.) and Clarkson (Saturday, September 23 at 4 p.m.). Hobart hosts Vassar next Friday and RPI next Saturday.
