SCHENECTADY, NY -- Joey Lokitis scored a game high 20 points and Drew Goldstein had 13 points with six assists to lead Union to a 61-60 men's basketball victory over St. Lawrence Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchmen improved to 2-2 in the league and 6-8 overall, while the Saints fell to 2-2 in the league and 6-9 overall.
Keven Donohue added 10 points and Matt Covucci dished out six assists for the hosts. Union shot 43% and forced 18 turnovers.
Freshman guard Kyle Miller (Central Square, NY) scored 12 points for St. Lawrence, while senior guard Andy Hoercher (Auburn, NY) scored 11 and and senior guard Josh Sharlow (Norwood, NY) added 10. Sophomore guard Ralph Temgoua (Paris, France) had a game best 12 rebounds along with six points and six assists for the Saints.
Union led 61-56 with 3:40 left in the second half after a layup by Lokitis. After a Union foul with 2:52 remaining, freshman forward Nick Meunier (Colchester, VT) made both free throws to pull the Saints within three at 61-58. Union had a foul with 50 seconds left and after Temgoua missed a free throw, he got his own rebound and made the layup with 46 seconds left to make it a one point game. Union had a turnover with 13 seconds left, and the Saints' game winning attempt in the paint by Hoercher missed with three seconds remaining.
Saint Lawrence, which trailed 34-31 at halftime, had a 36-27 rebounding advantage. Union's biggest second half lead was seven at 49-42 when Donohue made a three pointer with 12:52 remaining.
Union hosts Clarkson Saturday at 4 p.m. while St. Lawrence plays at 4 p.m. at Skidmore.
