Covucci named to All-Tournament Team, Union downs Elms, 74-68

Junior forward Matt Covucci scored 13 points and had six rebounds en route to All-Tournament Team honors while senior guard Joey Lokitis scored a game high 23 points to lead host Union to a 74-68 victory over Elms in the Consolation Game of the 2010 Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament Tuesday night. The Dutchmen are now 4-6 while the Blazers fell to 6-4.

Covucci had 25 points and 13 rebounds in his two games. Elms guard Juan Maldonado (Holyoke, MA), who had 16 points and six assists in the consolation contest, also made the tourney team after a total of 30 points, 14 assists and nine steals in his two games.

Gordon won the tourney with a Championship Game victory over Montclair State, 61-53, led by tourney MVP Aaron Trigg's 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

In the consolation contest, Javon Mathis (East Hartford, CT) scored 14 points and Edgar Martinez (Springfield, MA) added 13 for Elms. Union shot 51% for the night with a 34-29 rebounding mark. Elms shot 43%.

The Dutchmen led 40-38 at halftime featuring 16 points from Lokitis, who bounced back from a two point game the night before. Elms led by four at 58-54 after a jumper by Martinez with 10:10 left in the second half. But Union went on a 12-4 run in the next 6:12 for a 66-62 lead with 3:58 left on a layup by Cal Shorey. Elms then took a 68-66 lead, the Blazers' final lead, in the next 1:11 on a 6-2 run capped by a three point play by Martinez. But Covucci tied it at 2:19 and Lokitis hit an off balance three with 35 seconds left just as the shot clock was winding down for the 71-68 lead. He later made two free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the game.

Union is idle until the first Liberty League game of the season, Tuesday, January 12 at home against Skidmore. Elms hosts Newbury Saturday at 4 p.m.
