SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior defenseman Ben Stewart scored his first goal of the season in the final minute, but the men's soccer team was unable to complete the rally against William Paterson, falling 2-1 at College Park.
William Paterson forward Mike Lowe recorded both goals for the Pioneers, who improved to 6-1-2 on the year, while the Dutchmen fell to 7-2-1.
Lowe scored his first goal at 34:44 of the first half taking a lead pass for a partial breakaway in the box. Junior goalkeeper Adam Margulies made the initial save, but Lowe followed up the rebound for an open net goal to give William Paterson the lead.
Union mounted pressure on the William Paterson defense throughout the second half and had two quality chances to gain an equalizing score. At 71:32, senior forward Chris Chiodo fired wide from the right side and at 78:26, junior forward Craig Santangelo also missed the net on a shot from straightaway.
The Pioneers struck again at 79:02, when Lowe corralled a long pass and chipped the ball past Margulies for a 2-0 lead.
Stewart struck on a header at 89:35 off a free kick into the box by senior forward Jamie McDonald.
For the game, Union outshot William Paterson 13-8, and held a 9-2 shot advantage in the second half.
The Dutchmen will travel to Clarkson for its next contest on Oct. 8 at 4:00 p.m.
