SCHENECTADY, NY- Marc Zeyak scored three goals to lead the Union men's soccer team to a big win over Liberty League rival Vassar 5-4 to snap a four game winless streak on Sunday afternoon. The win improves their record to 9-5-2 and assures them of a playoff spot while Vassar falls to 8-6-1.
Union came out strong in the first half as they went up 3-0. Craig Santangelo hit a shot that went off the post but Zeyak took the rebound at 6:09 and put it home to get the Dutchmen on the board. Santangelo would score his first of two goals in the game later at 24:57 when he beat the Vassar defender and the ball trickled in for the score. Zeyak scored his second of the game exactly a minute later to stake Union to a big lead. Vassar would tack on a late goal to make it 3-1 at halftime.
Zeyak would get the hat trick in the 51st minute to put Union up 4-1. The Brewers would mount a comeback as they would score twice in a row to get to within one goal of tying the game. The Dutchmen would cling to the one goal lead until late in the second when following a red card on Vassar's Zander Mrlik, Santangelo would bury the penalty kick to give Union some needed insurance as the Brewers would add another goal with just over a minute left to play to make it 5-4.
Adam Margulies had four saves in goal for Union. Ryan Grimme had two saves for Vassar in 54:16 and was replaced by Alex Egan who had three saves in 35:44 of playing time.
Union led in shots 16-13.
The Dutchmen close out the regular season on the road against Skidmore on Saturday at 2:30 pm. Union can finish anywhere from #2 to #4 in the Liberty League as St. Lawrence has clinched the #1 seed.
