LAKE PLACID, NY - Freshman defenseman
Mat Bodie scored with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to help Union earn a 3-3 tie with RPI in the Halloween Faceoff at the famed Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY.
With the tie Union moved to 5-1-2 on the season while the Engineers are 3-1-3 on the year.
With goaltender
Keith Kinkaid on the bench for an extra attacker, sophomore forward
Jeremy Welsh set up the game tying goal. Welsh corralled the puck off the boards and found Bodie cutting to the net from the point. Bodie took a pass in the slot and fired the puck past RPI goaltender Allen York to tie the game at 3-3.
Union took an early two-goal lead in the first period with help from its potent power play. With RPI's Bryan Brutlag in the penalty box for interference, senior forward
Adam Presizniuk fed Gred Coburn who skated into the slot from his defensive position to beat York and put Union up 1-0 at 8:01.
With Brutag in the box again for tripping, Presizniuk struck at 13:26, scooping up a loose puck off a Coburn shot and finishing into an open net for a 2-0 Union lead.
The score remained that way until 15:39 of the second period, when the Engineers got on the board. After a good shift in Union's zone, RPI's Tyler Helfrich found Nick Bailen, who fired a puck through traffic past Kinkaid to cut Union's lead in half.
In a span of 11 seconds, RPI completed the comeback and took its first lead of the game. C.J. Lee pounced on a rebound at 10:50 to tie the game at 2. Then Helfrich gave the Engineers the lead, beating Kinkaid over the shoulder at 11:01. RPI appeared poised for a come-from-behind victory until Bodie's goal in the final minute.
RPI outshot Union 28-20 for the game. The Dutchmen recorded the only shot in overtime.
Union will open up ECAC play at Harvard next Friday at 7:00 pm.
