Union Wins Two Matches at Interleague Challenge

The women's volleyball team came up big on the first day of the Interleague Challenge.  They defeated Lasell College in the first match 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19) and played a hard-fought decision with SUNY Oneonta 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11).

 

Against Lasell, Mackenzie Westfall had 42 assists and five kills. #Erika Van Valkenburg led with 25 digs while Eve Richards# was second with 24 digs and led with 15 kills.  #Casey Tepper# contributed 13 kills and 16 digs.

 

Lasell took an early lead in the first game 6-2  but the Dutchwomen came back to get within one point of tying it up when Jordan Remillard tipped the ball over the net and in for the point.  Her kill would later tie the game at 14 all.  Union would go when Lasell's block attempt when out of bounds.  The Dutchwomen would win the game on Richards' kill.

 

The second game was a bit closer as Union won 25-21. Lasell claimed the third game 25-21.  They had a 15-10 lead in the fourth game, but Union would again come back to tie and then go ahead 20-18.  Lasell would tie it and the match was tight but the Dutchwomen pulled away in the end 25-22 for the overall victory.

 

In the second match of the night against SUNY Oneonta, the two teams played very close early on.  Union would build leads of 11-6 and 15-10.  The Red Dragons would go on a small run until Richards' kill ended Oneonta's streak.  She would again come up with a big kill to give Union the 25-19 win. The two teams were tied at seven in the second game and then 11 before Union took a 15-14 lead.  The Red Dragons would build a 22-17 and the Dutchwomen would rally to get within two, but Oneonta scored three straight times to win 25-20.

 

Union would go on a 6-1 run late in the third set but Oneonta would againt claim it 25-20 to go up 2-1.  The Dutchwomen would fight back in the fourth set as they would have a 16-11 lead which Oneonta would try to close but would fail to overcome as Union held on for the 25-22 victory. 

 

The Dutchwomen would come out strong in the final set and Oneonta rallied in the end but Remillard's kill for match point proved to be the deciding factor as Union would win 15-11.

 

Westfall was huge again as she had 47 assists.  She also contributed three blocks.  Remillard had 15 kills and also three blocks.  Richards had 16 kills, nine digs, and three blocks.  Van Valkenburg had 17 digs while Casey Tepper had 13 kills and 11 digs.

 

Union returns to the court tomorrow as they will face SUNY Potsdam at noon followed by Ithaca at 2 pm..
