With Union down a man for the final 1:51 of regulation after a major penalty for hitting-from-behind on Mike Ingoldsby, RPI held the puck in the offensive zone in the final seconds of the game. RPI's Chase Polacek fired two shots on net, both stopped by sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid. Then with .2 seconds remaining, Marty O'Grady snuck the puck between Kinkaid's legs for the game-tying score.

RPI's power play (3-for-7) was held in check until the opening minutes of the third period. Patrick Cullen pounced on a rebound behind Kinkaid off a shot by Brock Higgs to cut Union's lead to 2-1 at 1:02. RPI's goal ended a streak of 20 consecutive penalties killed by Union spanning six games.
Joel Malchuk tied the game at 10:01 of the third period, beating Kinkaid to a rebound on a Bailen shot from the wing.

The Engineers controlled play through the first period, outshooting the Dutchmen 14-3. Kinkaid, who entered the night with the nation's third best goals-against average (1.35), was up to the task, coming up with a number of key stops in the opening frame.
RPI's Scott Halpern had the best scoring chance at 10:32, following up an initial shot by Johnny Rogic on a rush into the Union zone. Halpern got enough on the shot to beat Kinkaid, but before the puck crossed the line, the net dislodged and thus the goal was disallowed.
