SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore forward
Keven Donohue scored 19 points and sophomore guard Joseph Mason added 13 with a career high eight assists as the Union College men's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with an 80-66 home win over SUNY Cobleskill Sunday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Fighting Tigers fell to 0-6.
Drew Goldstein had 12 points and
Rusmir Dzanko added 10 for the Dutchmen, while
Matt Covucci led the squad with seven rebounds. Union held the Fighting Tigers to 41% shooting and won despite getting outrebounded, 41-34 for the game.
Cobleskill was led by junior guard Brendan Doherty, who scored 17 points, and Haneef Scott added 15. Craig Orner had six rebounds.
Union started the season hot with a solid first half, shooting 52% and taking a 40-21 lead into halftime. The Dutchmen opened the second half with a 12-5 run in the first 4:33 for a 26 point advantage at 52-26. Cobleskill pulled to within 16 at 67-51 with 4:51 left, but the Dutchmen got it back up to 20 with 4:20 left on a Donohue dunk. The Fighting Tigers went on a 14-3 run to pull to within nine on a three pointer by Doherty with 1:14 remaining, making it 74-65 Union. It was nine again with 1:06 left (75-66) but Union took advantage of the double bonus and made five free throws in the final 1:04 to wrap up the victory.
The Dutchmen return to action Wednesday night, December 1, when they host SUNYIT at 7 p.m.
