SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Kelly Blackhurst had a goal and assisted on another to lead #7 nationally ranked Skidmore College to a 3-0 home win over Union College in a Liberty League Field Hockey Semifinal Game at Skidmore Wednesday. The victory puts the Thoroughbreds, the top seed in the tourney, into the league title game at home Saturday with an overall record of 17-1 against Hamilton or William Smith. The Dutchwomen, seeded fourth in the tournament, finish the 2010 season with a 10-8 overall record.
Annie Rosencrans opened the scoring for Skidmore when she redirected a shot from Kelly Blackhurst just 5:40 into the game. It was her 15th tally of the season.
At 17:34, the Thoroughbreds made it 2-0 on a Blackhurst goal. Christine Kemp passed across the middle to Blackhurst, who potted her 19th goal of the year. The 2-0 lead held up although Union's
Alex King had a shot blocked in close at the 32 minute mark off a corner from
Lauren Winchell.
In the second half, Annie Rosencrans gave Skidmore a three goal lead at 45:11. Kemp joined her for a two-on-one breakaway and Rosencrans converted for her 16th of the year for Skidmore.
Moments later, right around the 50 minute mark, Union peppered Skidmore goaltender Liz Catinella.
Kelsey Powers' shot was stopped and
Isabel Zellweger had consecutive shots from in the box but the Thoroughbred goalie preserved the shutout during this flurry.
The Dutchwomen had numerous opportunities with just under seven minutes remaining in the second half. Winchell had back-to-back shots stopped by Catinella.
Union senior goaltender
Sarah Rios made nine saves in her final game in a Dutchwomen uniform. Catinella made seven saves for Skidmore. The Throughbreds had a 22-11 shot advantage and 17-8 advantage in corners.
