Dutchwomen Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Princeton

Heywood's goal put Union up 2-0 in the first period

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Union women's ice hockey team skated out to a 2-0 lead on visiting Princeton and held a late lead in the third period, but the Bobcats scored to tie the game and won it in overtime 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.
 
Emile Aresenault poked in the first goal of the game to put the Dutchwomen up 1-0 at 2:38 of the first period. Later, a shot by Lauren Cromartie rebounded off Princeton goaltender Cassie Seguin and Callee Heywood took it and scored to make it 2-0 Dutchwomen. The Tigers held a slim lead in shots after the first, 11-10.
 
Princeton finally got on the board at 7:51 of the second period on a goal by Corey Stearns. Union killed off three Tiger power plays in the period to hold a 2-1 lead going into the final frame.
 
Union was still up 2-1 late in the third period and was poised for the victory but Stearns again would light the lamp and tie the game at 2-2 to send it to overtime. Just 1:13 into the extra period, Stearns would find Sally Butler for the game winner.
 
Kate Gallagher started in goal for Union and made 47 saves. Seguin had 19 saves for Princeton. She was pulled in favor of Rachel Weber in the third period and she had five saves.
 
Princeton led in shots, 50-28. Overall, Union was effective on the penalty kill as Princeton was only 1-for-6 on the power play.
